“How did you all design this place?!” or “Who did you work with to design this place?!” Something we get asked daily around here. We usually just smile and say something like “It’s a lot of work but we have fun doing it!”. The truth is it that we threw out the traditional design process and just went with whatever was in our head. So Here is a taste of what designing femme x COLUMBIA looked like.
We started with a pile of really, really dirty antique rugs. We honestly couldn’t even see what they really looked like or what colors they had but we knew they would be awesome.
We decided early on that the space had to have it’s own unique vibe. Even though a house may be 200 years old, it was important to mix the old with new, while keeping the charm. Paint colors, light fixtures, straight toilets, sinks, tile and furniture are all intentional selections, not trendy or traditional.
We collect treasures from auctions, antique stores, Facebook marketplace etc. When we come across a piece we like, we design a room around it. I can remember coming home from a random trip to Camden with some giant lion head tables and shoving them in a family members garage with the hopes they would be something fantastic! If you limit yourself, you’ll miss out on that perfect, yet imperfect, piece that you eventually can’t live without.
GRAPH PAPER IS QUEEN
PRO TIP: You don’t need fancy software to map out a room! We use good old fashioned graph paper.
DON’T FORCE IT
Sometimes you hit a wall and you just can’t see a vision for a space. We’ve run into this a few times over the last year. Give it time and don’t force the design just to have something done.
WE LOVE COLOR! BUT ALSO NEUTRALS
You can have both neutral vibes together with bold and colorful right next door. We want rooms in a space to have different energy throughout. Decide what mood you want people to feel in a space.
Neutral = Chill
Bold = Vibrant
Rooms need to be able to expand and contract depending on its use and who’s using it. Comfortable chairs and seats are a must for all shapes and sizes!
KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Have your eye on that fancy designer couch but can’t pay for it? You don’t have to spend a fortune to have cool, unique pieces; you just have to be willing to hustle to find them.
