Kara Perry: Artist Talk

Hello! My name is Kara Perry and I’m a film photographer. I’m a 39-year-old Capricorn sun, Pisces moon, and Gemini rising for those of you who are interested! I moved to Charlotte NC from Washington DC about 8 years ago. I grew up in Newark Delaware but lived most of my adult life in Philadelphia PA.

pictures of flowers and my dolls. As a teenager, I went to punk and hardcore music shows to photograph bands and friends. Some girlfriends and I ended up creating a ‘zine out of my photos and our poetry. Very “riot grrl“ of us at the time. I lost touch with photography for decades until I moved to CLT and started using disposable film cameras everywhere I went until I finally bought a real camera. Everything I saw in the world around me I viewed as if I were photographing it. Over the last 5 years, I have been lucky enough to photograph amazing things, places, and people. The people are the best part. As a kid growing up in the early 90s I used to steal my parents film “point and shoot” camera to take pictures.

Film photography has become the greatest romance of my life and I think that I hope that, people viewing my work can feel that love.
